"Pokémon X" and "Pokémon Y" have been confirmed to be the successor and sixth generation of the Pokémon franchise.

On Jan. 8, a Pokémon Direct presentation aired featuring Nintendo Global President Satoru Iwata, and he announced the progress the Pokémon franchise has made worldwide and ultimately provided with the trailer of the sixth generation games.

"Pokémon X" and "Pokémon Y" will be available by October 2013 for the Nintendo 3DS in Australia, Europe, Japan, and North America simultaneously.

What has also been confirmed following the trailer are the three new starter Pokémon and two legendary Pokémon who will serve as the mascots for each game.

The Starter Pokémon:

Chespin: The Grass Pokémon

Fennekin: The Fire Pokémon

Froakie: The Water Pokémon

Legendary Pokémon:

Xerneas: A deer-like Pokémon and mascot for "Pokémon X."

Yveltal : A bird-like Pokémon and mascot for "Pokémon Y."

Pokémon Company International Director of Consumer Marketing J.C. Smith recently told Polygon that the sixth generation games are not a "reboot."

"There's never been a conscious decision to reboot, it's just a decision to try new things and express the world in a new way," said Smith.

He added that "Pokémon X" and "Pokémon Y" "has been a long time coming. Obviously, Game Freak wanted to make sure that when they created this new universe on the 3DS, that it looked fantastic; both in the polygonal style and also when people are able to see the 3D effects as well. It's really exciting to see the Pokémon come to life a little more."

The name of the region has not been confirmed, but fans are speculating the region is based on the European continent. As pictured on Dainty Glaceon on Facebook, the Pokémon trailer featured three images in what appears to be in Western Europe, noting Great Britain's Eden Project in Cornwall and France's Eiffel Tower in Paris (see image below). The idea might not be as farfetched as the region for "Pokémon Black" and "Pokémon White" - Unova - is based on New York City, rather than sections of Japan as seen with the first four generations.
