"Argo" and "Zero Dark Thirty" were honored on Jan. 7th as the best films of the year by two separate critics organizations.  "Argo" garnered the best film award from the Online Film Critics Society and "Zero Dark Thirty" won the award from the Alliance of Women Film Journalists.

"Argo" has recently taken the steam from "Zero Dark Thirty"  by winning 10 critics organizations. It now stands as one of the front-runners to win the Oscar. "Zero Dark Thirty" seemed like the film to beat but after winning the first five precursors, the film has only picked up seven wins in the last month.

The two organizations honored the same actors. Daniel Day-Lewis scored his 22nd  and 23rd Best Actor wins for his portrayal of President Lincoln. Jessica Chastain won the best actress for her turn as Maya in "Zero Dark Thirty" and has now won 14 Best Actress awards.

In the best supporting actor race, Phillip Seymour Hoffman picked up his 9th and 10th recognitions for his turn in "The Master". Meanwhile, Anne Hathaway continued her winning streak for her role as Fantine in "Les Miserable" by receiving her 18th and 19th honors.

The best director race also continued to split critics as the EDA honored Kathryn Bigelow for her film "Zero Dark Thirty" and the Online Film Critics Society rewarded Paul Thomas Anderson for his film "The Master". The director race has yet to be defined but should become more clear after the Directors Guild of America announces their nominees on Tuesday Jan.  8.

The foreign film race continued to be a question mark as "Holy Motors" won the prize at the Online Film Critics, while "Amour" won with the EDA. Michael Haneke's "Amour" continues to fight an uphill battle as the film has not swept all the precursors and has lost buzz in the last few weeks. The film is a sure bet to get nominated at the Oscars for foreign film but with a category as unpredictable as the foreign film category, it can easily lose.
