Christmas appears to have been a good day for Apple with sales from the app store skyrocketing nearly 90 percent.

Distimo, which was created to make app space transparent and provide insight for anyone wanting to compete in the app market, reported sales from Apple's App Store increased by 87 percent on Christmas Day alone  with iPad downloads proving to be a popular gift this year.

It is noted that most developers publish apps around this time of the year to take advantage of the holiday shopping season, even if the apps are free.

According to Distimo, the "Most Successful" iOS apps on Dec. 25 were:

1. YouTube

2. Google Maps

3: ElfYourself by OfficeMax

4. Where's My Holiday

5. Skype for iPad

The top paid app was the Angry Birds Star Wars app.

As for Windows Phone devices, the apps options increased in 2012 with more than 75,00 new apps and games being added while 300,00 apps were updated.

According to CNET, Microsoft has 150,000 apps in their Windows Phone App Store but trails behind the 700,000+ in the Apple App Store.

Microsoft's Todd Brix posted that more people can download more apps this time than at any time before since Windows Phone 7 launched two years ago.

"Confidence is built by testing and certifying every app and game to help protect customers from malware and viruses," stated Brix. "Over the last year we've certified and published over 75,000 new apps and games (more than doubling the catalog size) and over 300,000 app updates. In addition, this year we added the capability for customers to tell us if they have a concern about an app."

"More iOS and Android devices are activated on Christmas Day than on any other day of the year," said Peter Farago of Flurry Analytics. "This year was no exception. On this Christmas Day 2012, more iPhones, iPads, Galaxy's, Kindle Fires, and more, were activated than on any other day in history."

According to Farago, Christmas 2012 broke records by selling 2.5 times more than Christmas Day 2011.
