Google Maps' return has been celebrated by millions.

Google Maps for the latest iOS 6 devices returned last week and quickly went to number one of the free apps on iTunes chart.

The numbers have come in and Google Senior Vice President, Geo and Commerce Jeff Huber confirmed that more than 10 million downloads took place in less than 48 hours following its release on iTunes.

Fittingly posting the announcement on Google+, Huber wrote, "We're excited for the positive reception of Google Maps for iPhone around the world. Congratulations to the Maps Team on the recognition for the passion and hard work they poured into it, for this release and over the last 7+ years."

Fellow Google+ users responded to Huber, stating:

Dodo Casanova: Of course, no contest

John Doherty: I'd love to see numbers on how many people upgraded to iOS6 once this was released. It was the only thing keeping me from updating my Apple products.

DC Menzel: Congratulations Google Maps Team and thank you for a very nice designed app and a very good maps experience on iOS!

K V R Harish Kumar: This shows the massive number of iPhones around the world. Kickass..!

Google Maps comes after Apple created Apple Maps for their latest mobile operating system, iOS 6, however, the new Apple maps app was heavily criticized, leading to Apple CEO Tim Cook to issue an apology and went as far to recommend alternatives.

In a minor blow for Google, however, is NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command) deciding to replace Google Maps to Bing Maps for the annual NORAD Track Santa.

"NORAD and Google have decided to go their separate ways and pursue other opportunities," said Michael Kucharek, a spokesman for the project, according to ABC News. "It was a mutually agreed upon decision that transpired earlier this year."
