Veteran Hollywood actor Kurt Russell is reportedly being eyed to play the father of Peter Quill, aka Star Lord in "Guardians of the Galaxy 2."

Cinemablend reports that the rumor started when director James Gunn stated that he would want Russell to play the part if he had his way when shooting for the film, which starts in February.

Russell has had a busy 2015 however, with Screen Rant reporting that he has had several blockbuster and independent films under his belt. The actor played Mr. Nobody in "Fast and Furious 7," Franklin Hunt in "Bone Tomahawk," and is set to play John "The Hangman" Ruth in the new Quienten Tarantino film "The Hateful Eight," which debuts on Christmas day.

For those who do not know the background behind the character, Peter Quill's dad was an alien who crashed landed on Earth and met Peter's mother and fell in love. The comics state that the alien was actually a prince of the Spartoi Empire named J'son or Jason on Earth.

The Spartoi race of aliens are a sister race to the Kree Empire, which were featured in the first "Guardians of the Galaxy" film.

When it came time to return home J'son had the memories of Peter's mother changed to make it seem their time together was but a dream, hence not allowing her to talk about Peter's real father.

The character was briefly mentioned in the first film, with Yondu and Kraglin stating that the Ravagers original mission was to bring Peter to his father. The conversation ended with Yondu calling Peter's father a jerk, and the two Ravagers laughed it off.

According to Gunn, Russell would have great on screen chemistry with Chris Pratt, the actor who plays Star Lord. The director states that Russel has his own brand of sarcasm that would mesh will with Pratt and that audiences could see where exactly Peter gets his sense of humor from.

Gunn also states that Peter's father might be one of the few new characters he has slated for the sequel, as the first movie admittedly had a few too many characters to keep up with.

However, it has been confirmed that all of the Guardians will return for the film, and Michael Rooker will also return as Yondu.
