The Screen Actors Guild Awards nominees were announced on the morning of December 12 with many surprises. Lincoln, Les Miserables and Silver Linings Playbook led the nominations with four a piece while The Sessions and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel obtained two nominations.

The Best Cast in a motion picture nominees included Lincoln, Argo, Silver Linings Playbook, Les Miserables and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Hotel came as a surprise because the film has not garnered any major awards in recent critic's circles.

The Best Actor race solidified Daniel Day-Lewis's frontrunner status because his biggest threat was not nominated. Joaquin Phoenix (The Master) was widely seen as the early frontrunner to win best actor in early predictions, but his absence from SAG's list essentially ends his hopes of winning the Oscar. Other nominees included Bradley Cooper, John Hawkes, Denzel Washington, and Hugh Jackman.

The Best Actress category secured Jessica Chastain and Jennifer Lawrence's positioned as best actress frontrunners while Marion Cotillard and Naomi Watts helped their cause to garner Oscar nominations. Helen Mirren was the lone surprise as she ousted Quenzhane Wallis (who was ineligible) and Emmanuelle Riva, who had won a number of critic's awards.

The Supporting Actor category saw a major surprise as Javier Bardem stole a spot from Leonardo DiCaprio, Matthew McConaughey, and Christoph Waltz. All of them were winners of the award with different critics' circles and many thought it could finally be DiCaprio's year to win an Oscar. In light of this nomination, it seems that will not be the case. Tommy Lee Jones and Phillip Seymour Hoffman remain frontrunners for the award while Alan Arkin and Robert DeNiro made stronger cases for Oscar nominations.

The Supporting Actress Category essentially eliminated Amy Adams' chances of winning the award at the Oscars. She was ignored in favor Nicole Kidman's turn in The Paperboy and Maggie Smith in The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Anne Hathaway is now the frontrunner as she was nominated alongside Helen Hunt and Sally Field.

In the Best Ensemble Category, SAG nominated The Amazing Spiderman, The Dark Knight Rises, The Bourne Legacy, Skyfall, and Les Miserables.

The SAG Awards are generally a good predictor of who the Academy award nominees will be. Last year only three actors nominated for the SAG awards were not nominated for the Oscars. Last year, three out of the four winners also won the Oscar. The SAG awards are made up of actors who also form up part of the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences.
