There are reports that “Men in Black 4” will include a female agent, with a starring role.

Producer Laurie MacDonald told BBC that the upcoming film, which is still in development, will feature a prominent woman. Fans expect the character to be donning the classic black suit and wielding various advanced weapons and tech, to battle aliens that threaten planet Earth.

SlashFilm wrote that a female agent is not an entirely new concept in “Men in Black.” In the first movie in 1997, Agent J (Will Smith) and Laurel Weaver (Linda Fiorentino) or Agent L collaborated to battle aliens near the end.

Producers MacDonald and Walter Parkes announced that they are working on a fully new “Men in Black” trilogy, although Will Smith will no longer be the star. The plot and cast are yet to be revealed. ScreenRant wrote that although Fiorentino will unlikely return as Agent L in the new movie, the idea of adding a female agent is a progressive approach. Producers will have to decide well on the key character that will establish the future of the franchise. They might decide to get a rising star to pair with an established actor, similar to how Smith and Tommy Lee Jones worked in the previous three movies.

Parkes explained that they are still in the early phases of development for the fourth film. They viewed the first three films as a kind of trilogy in retrospect. They tried to look for a theme base from the first three movies and plan to reinvent the next arc.

The producers are also not completely shutting out the idea of bringing Smith back. The actor last said that he was done with the “MIB” franchise.

ComingSoon noted that the first “Men in Black” film grossed over $589 million worldwide. “MIB 2” was released in 2002 and raked in over $440 million. The third movie launched in 2012 and grossed over $620 million. Smith and Jones starred in all three movies while Barry Sonnenfeld served as director. The movie franchise was actually based on the comics by Lowell Cunningham.

Previously, there were plans by Sony Pictures to create a mashup of “Men in Black” and “21 Jump Street” for a sci-fi comedy spoof of cinematic universes. However, the project will most likely be put on hold due to the busy schedules of filmmakers Chris Miller and Phil Lord.

“Men in Black 4” has yet to announce an official launch date.
