There are rumors that Tom Cruise will star in the reboot of “The Mummy.” Moreover, the Egyptian villain will be a woman in the next movie.

Screenrant wrote that Universal has plans to launch a number of monster movies in the next few years, beginning with “The Mummy,” by Alex Kurtzman. The new set of films is said to be closer to action movies, with characters harnessing super abilities, said Donan Langley, chairman of Universal. Other movies that are expected to return will feature characters like Dracula, Bride of Frankenstein, Van Helsing and Wolfman. The studio is said to be planning to launch one monster film every year, culminating in an entire universe.

“We’re really looking to see if there’s ways to create PG-13, more action than horror, like the early work of Steven Spielberg. The world of superheroes is black and white, the world of monsters is not. Sometimes you need evil to fight evil.” Langley said.

Kurtzman and Chris Morgan were contacted by the studio to create a universe featuring many of Universal’s own monster movie list. Kurtzman will serve as director and producer of the upcoming film, while Morgan and Sean Daniel will also produce. Cruise is not expected to serve as producer, although he is expected to contribute much during the development stages. Jon Spaihts will serve as scriptwriter. Jon Mone, executive VP of production at Universal, and Jay Polidoro, director of development, will oversee the entire project. Universal has not yet commented on the potential cast of its new project, Variety wrote.

Variety also reported that Tom Cruise is already in discussions to take the lead role in “The Mummy.” Filming is said to begin in spring 2016, while the movie is slated to launch in March 2017. It is still uncertain what role Cruise will play in the new movie, but there are rumors that he will play a former-Navy SEAL. The Mummy will reportedly be female this time and the setting will be in the modern era, which is different from the past three “Mummy” installments, which starred Brendan Fraser.

Currently, Cruise is filming “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back.” He is also preparing to film “Mission Impossible 6” in August 2016. The actor is represented by CAA.

“The Mummy” reboot is set to launch in the United States on Mar. 24, 2017. The next Universal Monster Movie is scheduled to release on Mar. 20, 2018. More updates and details on the film and Universal’s Monster Movies are expected soon.
