Back in January, SK Telecom and Nokia came together to venture on the development of 5G wireless technology.
The two telecommunication giants have teamed up in order to work together on creating powerful 5G features. To start the project, they will research and build a testing equipment for wireless solutions that will work within the range of 5G network.
In particular, the firms will focus on designing the mmWave 5G technology. Such technology normally utilizes extensive radio spectrum sources of over 6-gigahertz for data transfer.
To seal the joint project, a signing ceremony was held at Nokia's headquarters. The head of SK Telecom's research division, Choi Jinsung and Nokia's chief of technology and innovation, Hossein Moiin, were present at the event.
"By joining hands with Nokia, we expect to accelerate our speed towards the development of core 5G technologies," Choi said in the statement.
"Envisioning an era where all things and people are organically connected, SK Telecom will continue to bring innovative changes to the mobile network structure," Moiin stated.
Now, the test bed is expected to come out by the end of 2015, and that time has already come. According to a press release, it was set up in SK Telecom's facility located in Budang, South Korea.
On November 4, SK Telecom and Nokia presented a demo of the cmWave technology and the outcome was quite successful. The firms were able to achieve the results that they were hoping for in the standardization of 5G network technologies.
As per the description of Lightreanding, during the testing, the engineers made use of the 256 quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM), 8x8 Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) transmission and 400 MHz of bandwidth to achieve the 19.1 Gbps transmission speed.
Commenting on the newly developed technology Choi Jinsung said, "With the world's first demonstration of the cmWave technology, we have reached a significant milestone towards realizing 5G. The 19.1Gbps transmission speed we achieved almost meets one of the key capabilities of 5G defined by the ITU-R. SK Telecom will continue to work closely with Nokia Networks to maintain this momentum towards creating a new era of communications."
Finally, with the big success of the project, the Moblie World Live reported that Nokia has signed a deal with China Mobile Research Institute or CMRI to engage in the further development of 5G. In addition, the companies will collaborate on the implementation of the 5G network in a larger scale setting. The ultimate goal is to make this technology a standard in mobile communication.
