On December 3rd the New York Film Critics Circle announced that their best film of the year was Academy Award winner Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty. The critics marked the start of critic's awards which will be handed out throughout the months of December and January.

The awards surprised pundits and audiences all around with their selections. The Best supporting Actress award was handed to Sally Field for her portrayal as Lincoln's wife. The award was predicted to have been won by Amy Adams for The Master or by Anne Hathaway for Les Miserables. However both actresses were upset by veteran Field. Another upset occurred in the Supporting Actor category as Matthew McConaughey beat out heavy weights Tommy Lee Jones for Lincoln and Phillip Seymour Hoffman for The Master. But the biggest surprise was when Rachel Weisz won the best actress award for The Deep Blue Sea. Weisz has rarely entered conversation until this point as Jennifer Lawrence and Jessica Chastain were thought to be the early favorites. However Weisz can easily start gaining traction especially after the unprecedented win.

Daniel Day-Lewis won best actor for Lincoln and Kathryn Bigelow won the best director award for the second time since 2008 where she won for The Hurt Locker.

The New York Film Critics may lead to a boost at the Oscars but sometimes their choices never translate to Oscar wins or Nominees. Last year Albert Brooks was named best supporting actor but his performance did not translate to a nomination. In 2008 Sally Hawkins was named the best actress for Happy Go Lucky but did not get nominated at the Oscars. However last year they were the first to name Meryl Streep the best actress for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady. Streep went on to win the Oscar for Best Actress.

Previous NYFCC best picture winners include Oscar winners The Artist, No Country for Old Men, and The Hurt Locker.
