Is 14th Season Really Mythbusters' Last?

On Wednesday, Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage, creators of Mythbusters, announced that the 14^th season of the show will be its last.

"The pioneering reality series, one of cable's longest-running shows, will stage its final gonzo experiment during next year's 14th season after 248 episodes and 2,950 experiments," Entertainment Weekly reported.

This, however, is no out-of-the-blue turn of event, as the makers of the Discovery Channel TV series have already known for some time now that the myth-busting will end in 2016. As such, they have been "crafting an explosive final run for the seven-time Emmy-nominated series."

"It was my greatest fear that Mythbusters would just stop and we wouldn't be able to do proper final episodes," Savage confessed. "So whether it's myths about human behavior or car stories or explosion stories, we tried to find the most awesome example of each category and build on our past history."

When pressed about what to expect for the last episodes, Hyneman only said this: "There's an emphasis on looking back, we could do a Ph.D. dissertation on the things we're tackling. We've tried to go as deeply as possible into the things we're doing, and gave them the respect and care they deserve."

Interestingly, the hosting duo have never been friends off-screen, despite working on the show for the past 14 years.

"I think it's probably safe to say that continuing our on-screen relationship in front of the camera is probably not happening," Hyneman was quoted by Ars Technica as saying. "I expect Adam may well pursue things in front of the camera, but I'm most likely not."

Savage, in a separate interview, pretty much said the same thing about his on-screen partner.

It's also been noted that the two share a "famous animosity" with each other - could this be behind the show's end?

Fans of the show probably gleaned clues as far back as last year that the show may be ending pretty soon.

It can be recalled that Savage and Hyneman announced in August 2014 that their co-hosts on the show, Kari Byron, Grant Imahara, and Tory Belleci, would no longer be appearing with them.

The creators of the show then said that the upcoming season will have them going back to their roots with just the two of them presenting the series, CNET said.

However, Savage said that they only knew the series will be wrapping up "at the beginning of 2015."

In the wake of this announcement, Savage's hint that he'll still be doing television work somehow is small comfort that something like Mythbusters may bust its way on the small screen once again in the near future.
