After all of the speculation surrounding the newest Power Rangers movie set to hit theaters in 2017, it appears the plot may be taking an unexpected turn.

According to Collider News, the Power Rangers movie will not be a reboot of the 1990s Mighty Morphin film. Rather, it will pick up where the television series left off. Lionsgate is planning to produce the film post "Power Rangers: Dino Charge." If this is to be the case, most of the rumored plot surrounding the newest installment of Saban Entertainment's franchise is incorrect.

As The Movie Network points out via Collider News, villain Rita Repulsa has been circling the rumor mill. However, it appears the spandex donning teenager will actually square off with Scorpina, an antagonist from the early Power Rangers film who exited and vowed to return and never did. Until now? Scorpina is said to have been a prodigy of Rita Repulsa, learning all her evil ways from the evil humanoid alien witch. Scorpina plans to use her own army to destroy the Power Rangers and the ever-so precious Morphin Grid. This grid plays a major role in the film. According to Power Rangers Wiki the Morphin Grid has supplied Power Rangers of each generation wit their powers. In addition, it holds a gigantic database outlining every Power Ranger, every battle they have been a part of, and most importantly their abilities. Sounds like a useful tool for an enemy to find the weakest link. The Movie Network points out, this special tool is a great way for the filmmakers to write in small or even large cameos from previous Power Rangers, going back 20 plus years, while still maintaining a new angle for the 2017 film. This is definitely a good point and would seem like a great way to draw in viewers and fans of all ages.

At this time casting is underway. "The Martian's" Naomi Scott has been confirmed as the Pink Ranger while Daniel Zovatto, Ross Butler, Brian Marc, are testing for h role of Zack, the Black Ranger. K.J. Apa, Austin Butler, and Mitchell Hope are testing for Jason, the Red Ranger. Tnew new Power Rangers film will hit theaters January 2017.
