Is Samsung stepping up the game by planning a 3-variant flagship smartphone release?

In the last 2 or so years, 2-model releases have become the norm for many major smartphone makers, with Apple even following this path. And now, reports said that Samsung may very well be launching not just one or two handsets, but three. Talk about triple threats!

"According to the information that we've received today, Samsung might launch three different processor variants of the Galaxy S7," SamMobile, noted unofficial herald of all things Samsung, said. "Remember the Exynos 7422 chipset that was supposed to debut with the Galaxy Note 5? Well, Samsung supposedly has plans to launch a variant of the Galaxy S7 with that chipset in India."

"The Exynos 8890 (a.k.a Exynos M1)-powered variant of the device is expected to be launched in Korea, Japan, and the European markets," it further revealed. "On the other hand, the Galaxy S7 variant that will be available to consumers in China and the US will feature a Snapdragon 820 SoC."

If indeed true, this will be the first time the South Korean tech giant has released a flagship handset with three different processors. However, as these reports have not yet been officially confirmed and it will still be quite a while before Samsung will release Galaxy S6's successor, these plans may change and there may be no three-variant release happening.

The Exynos 8890, also called Exynos M1, has showed promise as a powerful processor. Phone Arena had noted that it clocked "some mightily impressive scores in benchmark testing."

The third variant, which will feature the Snapdragon 820 chip, shows Samsung's prudence in avoiding the controversial Snapdragon 810, which has been "plagued by overheating controversies" and has consequently "damaged the reputation both of its maker and many top-end smartphones powered by it."

Continued buzz about the upcoming Galaxy S7 appear to show that the recent release of the Galaxy S6 edge+ and the Note5 have not distracted pundits enough to hold off talking about the yet to arrive handset just weeks after the release of the latest Samsung offerings. Aside from the three-variant release rumors, there has also been talk that the S7 may have a dual camera setup. However, some sources allegedly later said that they are "unsure" whether this feature will indeed make its way to S7.

"Samsung may have plans to test the waters with a dual-camera setup on another smartphone shortly after the Galaxy S7 launch," Digital Trends noted.
