If the New York Yankees are setting their sights on the world series, they may have to do it without pitcher CC Sabathia.

Known to most as Captain Courageous (CC), Sabathia bared that he was entering a rehabilitation program to address his alcohol issues. He is expected to be in rehab for at least a month and that time alone keeps him out of the Yankees rotation.

Here is his official statement as released by the Yankees.

"Today I am checking myself into an alcohol rehabilitation center to receive the professional care and assistance needed to treat my disease," Sabathia said in a statement.

"I love baseball and I love my teammates like brothers, and I am also fully aware that I am leaving at a time when we should all be coming together for one last push toward the World Series.

He was not expected to pitch Tuesday in the Yankees wildcard tiff against the Houston Astros. This would be the first playoff game for the Yankees since 2012 and the development has left the Yankees stunned.

Nevertheless, the team threw its full support behind CC, citing that he will be getting the proper professional help into controlling what he calls a disease.

"It hurts me deeply to do this now, but I owe it to myself and to my family to get myself right. I want to take control of my disease, and I want to be a better man, father and player."

This season, Sabathia is 6-10 in 29 starts for the Yankees, deemed as the worst he has had in his 14-year career. Further to that, CC had a 4.73 ERA, 137 strikeouts and gave up a career worst-tying 28 home runs this season.

The six-time all star did however show some improved pitching before deciding to check in to rehab, settling down and churning a 3.80 ERA in August. He closed the season with a 2.17 ERA in September.

The bright spot is that this is not yet the end of Sabathia’s career. In fact he intends to be back next season for the Yankees, hopefully fully recovered and better.

Sabathia has had a rough year that included a shouting altercation caught in a video back in August. Luckily friends were around to prevent the incident from getting out of hand, pushing CC into a car before an unfortunate brawl could take place at the nightclub.

Though it wasn’t mentioned, it was believed to be part of the said alcohol-related diseases that the Yankees pitcher is pertaining to.

Sabathia could be good to go by Spring in February if all turns out well. He is scheduled to make $25 million next year and may get an option for another $25 million in 2017 provided he does not hurt his shoulder.
