On Mar. 18, 2014, Google filed a patent application for a device that can be worn on the head, and projects holographic images. It might be the successor of the Google Glass.

Phone Arena reported that the patent application was titled, "Lightguide With Multiple In-Coupling Holograms For Head Wearable Display." Google Glass is currently out of the tech scenes, so Google might be planning to re-launch the wearable device under "Project Aura."

With holograms available, users can interact with the background as viewed through a lens positioned on the head wearable. The application stated that the user's image of his surroundings will be augmented with an overlaying CGI, known as a heads-up display. There may also be real-world applications for the patent. The device might allow a pilot to see vital flight control information without having to take their sight off the flight path. There are also possible public safety applications like thermal imaging and tactical map displays, the patent application cited.

Tech Crunch wrote that the technology is expected to keep developing over time, with new practical and leisure applications becoming available. Several of the real-world applications may be limited at the moment, due to cost, dimensions, weight, field of view and efficiency of conventional optical systems that implemented current HMDs. The original Google Glass was not well-received due to its clunkiness and lack of functionality in real-world settings.

Google may be attempting to revive the Glass project through "Project Aura", based on a report by Business Insider. There is also a possibility that Google's smart eyewear may become the hardware platform for the AR content of Magic Leap. Magic Leap aims to turn the real world into a desktop for users. After years of work placed in developing Google Glass before, the company is more aware of the pros and cons of the device and can improve the concept to allow more functionality through the augmentation process.

Google stated that they base patients on various ideas, which may evolve into real products or services in the future. Others, however, do not make it past the drawing board. There is still no confirmation from Google that the new head wearable will release in the near future. Users should take the news with a grain of salt and hope that the company will come up with efficient ways to create a glass device that they can use for daily tasks.
