The sequel to Guillermo del Toro's giant robot versus monsters movie "Pacific Rim" seems to be running into scheduling problems with its studio Universal Pictures.

According to the Wrap, Pacific Rim 2 was originally set for an Aug. 4, 2017 release date but it has now been pushed off the calendar altogether. What does this mean for the movie? Will it still be made?

Well, according to del Toro, the movie is still on. His response to all allegations of delays and problems with the movie? The Mexican director simply states that he's on it. While that doesn't tell fans of the first movie much, it isn't uncommon for the director to make sure that everything is creatively in place before a movie can go forward.

One such movie franchise that hasn't moved forward because del Toro doesn't believe it's ready to move forward is the "Hellboy" series. While both movies were largely successful in the theaters, it has been almost a decade since "Hellboy II: The Golden Army" came out, and fans are unsure if another film will ever be released.

Artistry may not be the only reason why "Pacific Rim 2" has been having a hard time. According to Cinema Blend, the idea of making "Pacific Rim 2" hasn't always been a certainty. While the movie did make USD $400 million against a USD $190 million budget, the movie wasn't the smash hit that the studio was expecting as most of the ticket sales came from overseas audiences. With a poor domestic showing from the original movie, its understandable that Universal would be cautious about a sequel.

From what little has been leaked about the story of "Pacific Rim 2", the world has changed a lot since the events of the first movie. The world now has to cope with the fact that the giant monsters that were once invading cities aren't a constant threat anymore. Del Toro has pretty much confirmed that anyone who didn't die in the first movie would make it back to the sequel.

The announcement of "Pacific Rim 2" being taken off the calendar of Universal Studios might spell the death of the franchise, but in Hollywood, stranger things have happened. The Aug. 4, 2017 slot that was originally kept for the sequel has now been given to another sequel "Pitch Perfect 3."
