There are reports that a new cable series will be created based on the podcast “Serial”. A new deal will most likely bring “Serial” to television soon.

The Hollywood Reporter reported that writer/director/producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and Fox 21 Television Studios pitched an idea to “Serial” podcast host Sarah Koenig, which the latter liked. Although not a lot of details have been revealed yet, they intend to make a cable series based on the experience of creating the highly successful podcast. The new show will not focus on the Adnan Syed case that “Serial” host Sarah Koenig monitored every week in the first season.

Koenig, Julie Snyder, Allisa Shipp, Ira Glass, Seth Cohen, Lord and Miller will serve as executive producers of the project and will start pitching the project to cable networks as soon as a writing team has been formed.

“From the very first week of serial’s release last fall, everyone at Fox 21 TVS was obsessed with the podcast,” said Fox 21 Television Studios president Bert Salke.

“One year later, thanks to the incredible passion of Chris and Phil, who flew to New York and shared their vision with Sarah, Julie [Snyder], Alissa [Shipp] and Ira [Glass] for what the series could be, we’re moving forward on this exciting project,"Salke continued.

Salke explained that the project provides a rare storytelling opportunity and they are confident that they will find a great writer who can expect to pitch it to outlets in the near future.

Julie Snyder shared that their team is very interested with the unique storytelling approach that Lord and Miller plan to employ. He said that they admired that way that the two producers are trying new things and they feel that they have the same objectives. Screen Rant reported that the new project will be a good deviation for Koenig and Snyder who mainly worked on comedies. Considering the team behind the project, fans expect that the show will be substantial and entertaining.

The second season of the “Serial” podcast is in development, which will allegedly focus on the Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl case. A third season has also been confirmed. Bergdahl is an Army soldier who disappeared while assigned in Afghanistan. He was held prisoner by the Taliban. The second season of the podcast is co-produced by Page One Production Company, The Hollywood Reporter revealed.

Lord and Miller are represented by UTA and Ziffren Brittenham. Koenig, Snyder, Glass and Ship are represented by UTA and Lichter Grossman.

More details and the release date are expected to surface soon.
