Channing Tatum's solo "Gambit" movie has certainly had its fair share of ups and downs, with Tatum almost leaving the project and with director Rupert Wyatt backing out.

Now it seems that if the movie wants to have Gambit's on again, off again love interest Rogue in the film, it will have to be without Anna Paquin, who portrayed the power-stealing southern belle in the first three "X-Men" films.

The 33-year-old actress was recently asked by a fan on her Twitter account if she would be playing Rogue in "Gambit". Paquin simply replied "No."

While this isn't exactly a killing blow for the film, since Paquin's scenes with Rogue were eventually removed from the final cut of "X-Men: Days of Future Past", the studio could simply not include the character in "Gambit" or choose to recast another actress for the role. It has been done before, most recently with Liv Tyler replacing Jennifer Connelly as Betty Ross in the "Hulk" franchise.

According to Comic Book, Channing Tatum was also asked if he would like to have Paquin reprise her role as Rogue, and if not the "True Blood" star, then who would he like to see play the character? Tatum simply replied that he's not going to say and that the fun part of waiting for a movie is making people wait and see what they are going to get.

Gambit's and Rogue's relationship was made popular by the 90's X-Men cartoon that ran on the Fox Kids network. While it was clear that Rogue's mutant power, the ability to steal other peoples powers and memories via skin to skin touch, made the relationship difficult, it did not stop the lovestruck Cajun from making advances on her. While it was clear there was something between the two in the cartoon, it wasn't until Jim Lee's run on the X-Men comic book where fans finally saw the two team members go into a formal relationship.

As stated previously, Rupert Wyatt was initially tagged to direct the solo "Gambit" movie, but he has backed out, stating scheduling conflicts. There is no word yet on how his decision will affect the production of the film.  As it stands now, "Gambit" is still scheduled to debut in theaters in October 2016.
