Sometimes, all you need to make it through the day is coffee; the divine brew that magically keeps you from strangling yappy co-workers every morning.

National Coffee Day - or International Coffee Day as it is often called - doesn't have a direct origin or reason for calling Sept. 29 its birth date, but its U.S. roots can be traced back to 2009 when the Southern Food and Beverage Museum in New Orleans used it to launch the first-ever New Orleans Coffee Festival.

The festival didn't withstand the test of time but its faux holiday has, stretching to at least 16 countries, including England, Canada, and Japan.

Today, most major coffee purveyors offer some kind of discount, if not a freebie, to commemorate the fledgling holiday. Most, save Starbucks.

Starbucks

Instead of handing out free cups of java, Starbucks said coffee farmers would receive 70 cents for every bag purchased in U.S. stores. Starting today, they will also plant a coffee tree for every bag purchased through 2016. The company said it wants to honor farmers and families around the world that harvest your cup of Joe every morning, beginning in Central America where coffee productions is slowing thanks to aging trees and a coffee bean-eating fungus called "coffee rust."

Starbucks may not have any giveaways today, but here are some local retailers joining in the National Coffee Day celebration.
