Fans of the popular first person shooting franchise "Halo" have been waiting patiently for almost three years since the release of "Halo 4" on the Xbox 360. The good news for these fans is that the studio developing "Halo 5" for Microsoft, 343 Industries, has confirmed that "Halo 5" is not very far away and that the next game "Halo 6" is in the planning stages.

According to Game Spot, "Halo" franchise development director Frank O'Connor has laid out the plans for Master Chief, the hero of the story. O'Connor confirms that the studio already knows and is pretty confident with what they have planned for Master Chief, and that the studio has even gone onto planning "Halo 6." O'Connor has been working on the "Halo" franchise for over 10 years now, first with the parent company Bunge and now with Microsoft.

O'Connor states that this is the first time in the franchise's history that the studio has gone far enough to planning the sequel before the previous game has come out, Games Radar reports. O'Connor also expects that the current story that Master Chief finds himself in could span for the next decade or so. O'Connor claims that in the first few installments, the "Halo" team was not yet sure on where the story would be going off to.

During the first game, while it was groundbreaking during its time, the team was not completely sure that the game would turn into a franchise, and during the sequel, a lot of the planned story got discarded due to production issues. O'Connor said that the dilemma for "Halo 3" was that it had to cover a lot of the plot holes left by the first two games while still maintaining a new and intricate story line.

O'Connor also confirms that "Halo 6" might even be the last mission for the legendary Master Chief as he has become a relic of the times, as will be shown in "Halo 5", which has been named "Halo 5: Guardians." Master Chief finds himself a product of a time that has passed, and a new breed of Spartans may actually replace Master Chief one day.

The new Spartan type has been released in "Halo Reach". Meanwhile, "Halo 6" will be debuting new characters into the "Halo" franchise---another upgrade to the Spartans previously unveiled.

With the plans for "Halo 6" being kept mostly under lock and key, fans can only wonder what Microsoft and 343 have in store for the Master Chief.
