Among the major rumors surrounding the upcoming Xbox have been the attachable controller and the two different console versions. Now it seems that the next Xbox could have augmented reality lasses.

According to Gameranx, Microsoft has filed a patent for such glasses via the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

As described in the filing, the glasses would be able to superimpose different information on the image in similar manner as football broadcasts superimpose first down markers onto the playfield even though they do not exist. The patent adds that the augmentation could be expanded to replays and language translations at events and would cause "the user to divert their gaze away from the event toward the display device."

The summary of the technology adds that it would provide the user with a head mounted display and that the user would be able to receive "information on objects, including people, within the user's field of view."

The patent was filed in May and Gameranx added that it could potentially replace the Heads Up Display (HUD) that currently dominates most video games, thus making game screens less cluttered.

There is currently no confirmation on the Xbox 720 and its release though many prognosticators are expecting a Fall 2013 launch.
