There may just be a cheap and very sustainable way to make homes for everyone, including the homeless and it involves a lot of mud.

An Italian based group known as World's Advanced Saving Project, WASP, has created the world's largest 3D printer, also known as BigDelta, and it can make budget-friendly and eco-happy houses out of clay and mud.

BigDelta, who stand 12 meters high, was unveiled during a three-day rally event that includes workshops, conferences, concerts and shows that lead up to the big reveal. The gigantic 3D printer can make houses out of natural materials -mud, clay, water, dirt, and natural fibers which subsequently deters from the use of expensive and environmentally damaging products, like cement. As Science Alert explains, a home made of clay does not require much to keep the walls solid. "Best of all, clay houses don't require much in the way of maintenance once they're up, and can last for years with thin applications of new clay over their external surfaces every five years or so."

Sounds like a great deal. To boot the clay huts are cost effective. WASP created the 3D printer with the intentions of providing a solution to housing shortages for the poor, basing it on findings projected by the United Nations. The global committee that promotes international co-operation estimate 4 billion people with annual incomes of under $3,000 will require low-cost housing by 2030.

BigDelta operates like that of "conventional filament-based 3D printer" although it is much larger in size. The large frame surrounding the printer is actually a support mechanism for the "printing nozzle that slowly extrudes what becomes the walls and ceilings of entire houses in a circular motion, layer upon layer, from the ground up." WASP advises the humungous printing apparatus is lightweight and easy to assemble as well as transport.

The shape of the clay homes are reminiscent of a swirl of icing that sits atop a cupcake. WASP is said to draw inspiration from traditional hut dwellings. Photos of the amazing and gigantic 3D printer can be seen here https://www.wasproject.it/. Peep a video of the crew assembling printer below.
