Why are these avians so angry? The first trailer of the "Angry Birds" movie will give you a peek at the answer.

After years in development, the film version of the once-viral phenomenon that the mobile game "Angry Birds" - which has been downloaded 3 billion times - is finally ready for release, albeit next year.

"First announced back in 2012, the movie stars Jason Sudeikis as Red, Josh Gad as Chuck, Danny McBride as Bomb, and Bill Hader as the villainous pig Leonard," MacRumors said.

"When it opens, 'The Angry Birds Movie' will premiere about seven years after the release of the original game," the tech news site added.

The film aims to answer the question why these birds are angry. And pundits are also interested in seeing whether this flick will actually fly in the box office stakes.

"The question Rovio gets more than anything is 'Why are these birds so angry?'" explained the film's producer John Cohen, as noted by Entertainment Weekly. "This is the origin story for how that conflict came to exist between birds and little green piggies."

The trailer doesn't really reveal a clear plot; rather, it highlighted the birds' anger management issues and the arrival of the piggies on their idyllic island.

"A yoga teacher tries to calm them - 'We gonna be working on managing our anger through movement' - but, doggone it, stuff happens," Deadline observed.

The film's co-director, Clay Kaytis, described Red as a "curmudgeon" who needed to be voiced by "an actor who could say these things and still be charming." And they found that in Sudeikis. What do you think of his casting?

Interestingly, the film comes during a tense time at Rovio, the game's developer. The company had announced a round of layoffs last year, shaving off 130 employees from its ranks. Then, earlier this year, it announced that its 2014 profits plummeted 73%, The Verge said.

Looks like the movie, slated for a May 20, 2016 release, will serve as the company's last lifeline.

As such, it's expected that Rovio, in collaboration with Sony, will promote the movie to the hilt in order to resuscitate the brand once more. However, some pundits have commented that Rovio's opportunity may have passed, as the flick apparently arrived long after the "Angry Birds" rage faded.

"The trailer makes it seem like the movie's going to try and make real characters out the birds who just been a set of abilities," Kotaku pointed out. "'Angry Birds' glory days are behind us but the movie might be a surprise."

Let us know what you think.
