MGM and Warner Bros. are currently collaborating to create a “Tomb Raider” movie reboot. The search for a director started after writer Evan Daugherty finished the script and a few names have come out as potential picks.

Cinema Blend revealed that MGM and Warner Bros. narrowed its list down to three potential directors for the upcoming film. They are Kathryn Bigelow, Catherine Hardwicke and Mimi Leder. The three were also included in the alleged director shortlist for Warner Bros.’ “Wonder Woman” in 2014. Tracking reported that Tricia Brock, director of TV shows like “Orange Is the New Black” and “The Walking Dead” was offered the role, but she ultimately rejected it.

Screen Rant stated that Hardwicke’s last movie was the first “Twilight” film installment and has since focused more on indie films and cable TV. Bigelow has established a reputation as an expert in drama/thriller and action/thriller. Some of her previous works include “The Hurt Locker” and “Zero Dark Thirty”. She won an Oscar for directing “The Hurt Locker” and was nominated for Best Picture for “Zero Dark Thirty”. Leder has worked on projects like “Pay It Forward” and “Deep Impact”. She has not worked on films as big as the other two directors, but can bring interesting takes on the “Tomb Raider” reboot.

Apparently, the plan for the new “Tomb Raider” film is to feature a darker and grittier tone just like the rebooted video games. The previous take on the franchise where Angelina Jolie starred was light and even borderline silly according to some. The three potential directors have experience in serious and gritty projects in the past. Even writer Daugherty is expected to follow the same path as well.

There is still no confirmation on the actress who will take on the role of main protagonist Lara Croft, as well as supporting cast members. No official release date for the movie has also been unveiled yet. More updates and details about the “Tomb Raider” movie reboot are expected in the following months. Screen Rant also provided a list of potential actresses who could play the role of Croft, which included names like Daisy Ridley, Lily James, Alexandra Dowling and Margot Robbie, among others.

In the meantime, fans of the treasure hunter franchise can look forward to the next game installment. Entitled “Rise of Tomb Raider” is set to launch in November 2015. It is the sequel to the 2013 game and will be produced by Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics.
