Apple's September 9 event yielded a chock-full of new digital goodies that are sure to please various types of mobile users. The company's bestseller was on full display and still in 2 iterations. Here's a rundown of the best features that the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus have on offer.
Improved Camera
"The main rear-facing camera will be 12 megapixels, a 50% boost from the iPhone 6's 8 megapixels, while the front-facing camera will be 5 megapixels," Time reported. "The camera will also be able to shoot in 4K, a super high resolution that provides extremely high image quality."
There's also a front-facing flash that "uses the LED screen to mimic a TrueTone flash that you'd find on the back of the camera," Tech Crunch said.
"The display also gets 3X brighter right at the moment of capture (similar to Photo Booth on OS X) so that there is enough light for your Kardashian-style shots," the site added.
However, the new-and-improved iSight camera still juts out a bit from the smartphone's body, which may prompt new users to take to those DIY tutorials sharing tips on how to tone down the protrusion.
Live Photos
"When you use 3D Touch to press on a photo, it will animate into a brief video with sound," The Verge observed. "The trick is done by capturing the 1.5 seconds just before and immediately after the shutter is triggered for the photo."
"It's not technically a video, as it's still capturing 12-megapixel shots on either side, at full quality," the tech news source continued.
Apple reassured users that this feature won't make photos take up more space than regular images. Think Harry Potter-like gif photos.
3D Touch
This is the handsets' major new feature. A user can "hold down on various apps to both 'peek' and 'pop'."
"For example, you could lightly tap on the content of an email to peek at the content inside, and if you press harder, the content you're peeking at will pop open fully," Tech Crunch explained.
The 3D Touch feature provides haptic feedback.
Faster Engine
"The new iPhone models come with the Apple A9 SoC, which is claimed to deliver 70 percent faster CPU performance than the A8 processor on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, and 90 percent faster GPU performance," NDTV noted.
Sturdier Body
Last year's models were encased in 6000 series aluminum. In the wake of "bendgate," Apple improved the handset body by using the stronger 7000 series aluminum, which is the same material used to make the Apple Watch Sport model. However, according to Ars Technica, this improvement resulted in a slightly heavier iPhone, although the difference from last year's isn't that significant.
"You couldn't call them heavy, but the 6Ses have more heft to them," the site noted, adding that if this makes the phone more bend-proof, the tradeoff is "worth it."
