Given a little bit more time, Metta World Peace could be back to competitive form. And if things work out, we might just see the temperamental forward back wearing the purple and gold.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports, Peace has been working out daily at the Lakers training facility in El Segundo. If things pan up, the defensive-minded Peace could very well be signed to a one-year pact with the Lakers for the coming season.

Peace spent four years with the Lakers (2009-2013). He was waived on July 11, 2013 when the Lakers waived him using the amnesty clause, a move made due to salary cap reasons.

He was eventually picked up by the New York Knicks in 2013 but would be waived in February, 2014. Peace took his act to the international scene, having brief stints in China and Italy.

Peace is expected to be around when training camp opens on September 29. While many are eager to see if Peace can still keep up with the younger players on the fold, the obvious reason behind the Lakers’ interest in Peace is his defensive prowess. He is also likely there to mentor the forward-line of the Lakers led by sophomore Julius Randle.

His possible insertion could be a big boost for the Lakers as head coach Byron Scott intends to implement an old school approach of defense-first. The Lakers have not exactly been good on the defensive end.

Last season, the only team that had a worse defensive rating with the Lakers were the Minnesota Timberwolves.

With Peace around, the Lakers can hopefully improve on that aspect. The Lakers will apparently hope for the best that Peace’s tenacity and toughness on the defensive end would rub on the rest of the Laker players.

It will be interesting as well if Peace has matured through the years that he has been out of the NBA scene. Peace, then known as Ron Artest, is of course best known for various skirmishes. The worst came in 2004 where he was the main protagonist in the Indiana Pacers vs. Detroit Pistons brawl.

Now at 35 years of age, the Lakers hope that without the antics that made Peace popular, his defensive skills can be put to good use.

If he proves to be fit enough to play, he will most likely make the lineup. If not, Peace will likely have to settle as one of the defensive brain thrusts for the Lakers.
