A considerable amount of tablet attention has been given to Apple, Samsung, and recently Microsoft's Surface tablets yet Amazon has a tablet that could fare well against the king of tablets - Apple.

Or will it?

The Amazon Kindle Fire HD was released in September while a month later, the iPad Mini was announced with a Nov. 2 launch date for the Wi-Fi model and a Nov. 16 date for the WI-Fi with Cellular variant.

Size and Weight:

The measurements of the iPad Mini and Kindle Fire HD are very similar but not equal. The iPad Mini has a length of 7.87-inches, a width of 5.30-inches, and a depth of 0.28-inches. The Kindle Fire HD has a smaller length of 7.60-inches, wider width of 5.39-inches, and a depth of 0.41-inches.

The Kindle Fire HD also weighs more with 13.93-ounces to the iPad Mini's 10.86-ounces.

Display:

The screen of the iPad Mini is measured diagonally at 7.9-inches with a pixel resolution of 1,024x768 and 162 pixels per inch (ppi). The Kindle Fire HD's screen is seven-inches with a pixel resolution of 1,280x800 and 216 ppi.

The type of display is different as well, with the Kindle Fire HD having the IPS TFT capacitive touchscreen while the iPad Mini has a LED-backlit IPD LCD capacitive touchscreen.

Memory:

When it comes the memory, both devices have their advantages and disadvantages.

The iPad Mini is available in 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB with 512MB of RAM. The tablet does not offer a card slot.

The Kindle Fire HD is available in 16GB and 32GB but a higher RAM of 1GB. Just like the iPad Mini, a card slot is not offered.

Camera:
Interested in photography?

If so, then the iPad Mini is perhaps best suited. The iPad Mini's rear-facing camera has five-megapixels with 2,592x1,944 pixels while none exisit for the Kindle FIre HD.

The Kindle Fire HD does offer a front-facing camera at 1.3-megapixels while the iPad Mini offers a 1.2-megapixel camera.

Video capabilities is not equipped for the Kindle Fire HD, but it is for the iPad Mini with 1080p for the rear-facing camera and 720p for the front-facing camera, each at 30 frames per second.

Wireless Connectivity:

The two tablets do offer Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth with A2DP, and USB.

Operating System:

The iPad Mini utilizes Apple's iOS 6 operating system while the Kindle Fire HD uses the rival operating system Apple has faced before - the Android. The Kindle Fire HD is installed with the Android version 4.0, known also as the Ice Cream Sandwich.

Colors:

The Kindle Fire HD is available with one color option - black. The iPad Mini is available in white and black.

Price:

The Kindle Fire HD's starting price is $199 for the 16GB unit and $249 for the 32GB.

The iPad Mini's starting price is $329 for the 16GB model, $429 for the 32GB model, and 64GB will have the price tag of $529.

However, the Wi-Fi with Cellular model of the iPad Mini will have different prices. The 16GB model has a price of $459, $559 for the 32GB, and $659 for the 64GB model.
