Daniel Radcliffe has gone a long way from his star turn in the "Harry Potter" film franchise. He's since taken on roles that would push his acting talents, as well as his career path, to riskier realms.

This time, his latest role, unlike the one that put him on Hollywood's map, is based on a real-life figure. However, like the boy wizard he portrayed for years, this character is a wizard of sorts, albeit in the digital context.

"Radcliffe plays Sam Houser, the British Rockstar Games co-founder who goes up against Jack Thompson, an American attorney who tries to bring down the production of violent, sexually explicit 'Grand Theft Auto,'" Mashable said.

The project, titled "The Gamechangers," is a made-for-TV drama commissioned for BBC Two. Its trailer shows Radcliffe and his nemesis, played by Bill Paxton, at odds over his runaway hit of a game.

"The special is based on David Kushner's 2012 book 'Jacked: The Outlaw Story of Grand Theft Auto,' which chronicled Houser and Thompson's prolonged legal battle in the wake of 2001's smash hit 'Grand Theft Auto III,'" The Verge noted. "Thompson's case against Houser was ultimately thrown out of court, and he was disbarred in Florida in 2008 for inappropriate conduct."

The film itself, directed by Owen Harris, was not without controversy. Rockstar's parent company, Take-Two, had sued the BBC for trademark infringement, as the special was filmed without the company's approval.

"Our goal is to ensure that our trademarks are not misused in the BBC's pursuit of an unofficial depiction of purported events related to Rockstar Games," the company was quoted as saying in a released statement.

While BBC has not yet publicly responded to this legal action, its press release regarding the 90-minute film read as follows, as noted by The Guardian:

"This drama is for an adult audience and has not been authorised by the producers of Grand Theft Auto. Rather, it is based on court documents and interviews with many of those involved in the real events behind this compelling story."

The trailer for the special has since been released despite the legal threat. The clip has been described by The Verge as having a "weird nationalist bent." "Thompson is incensed about 'what little regard these Brits have for the welfare of our children,' making it sound like 'Grand Theft Auto' was part of a covert British campaign to ruin a generation of American youth with video games," the piece pointed out.
