MLS fans buckle your seat belt, we are entering the most enthralling part of the regular season. The playoff push heats up and we could be about to see unlikely teams turn their fortunes around and start peaking when it counts.

Here's a run down of tonight's midweek action which should be full of the drama synonymous with this time of year...

Chicago Fire vs New York Red Bulls, Toyota Park, Bridgeview, Illinois, 20:30

The Red Bulls journey to Toyota Park to face a Chicago Fire team whose playoff hopes appear to be growing fainter and fainter. Tonight's encounter in Bridgeview will be the first of three meetings that these two teams will play before the end of the season and despite the Red Bulls' clear strength, the Fire will hope that if they can spring an upset they may kick start an end of season run to the post season.

Saturday's defeat to the Colorado Rapids saw the Fire sink to the bottom of the Eastern Conference and against a Red Bulls side challenging for conference supremacy, the task for the Fire to make the playoffs could not be harder, particularly against a Red Bulls side that are unbeaten in their last five.

Having scored five without conceding a single goal the Red Bulls are finishing strongly and Frank Yallop will be concerned about his defense as they haven't kept a clean sheet since the beginning of the month. Given that marquee player Shaun Maloney is on his way out of the club, Yallop may be hoping that new man Gilberto can bring some of the skills he showed against Colorado and inspire his team.

Yallop will know that if his side are to pull off the victory it will be a very big upset and given their current form, one that seems highly unlikely. If the Fire can disrupt the Red Bulls rhythm and avoid them dominating possession, however, then they may have a chance.

Colorado Rapids vs Houston Dynamo, Dick's Sporting Goods Park, Commerce City, Colorado 21:00

The final fixtures of the MLS Season is set for some major twists and turns as teams look to gain extra points and thrust themselves into those final playoff positions. As the Rapids and the Dynamo take to the field on Wednesday they will be hoping that a win could be just the kick to their end of season campaign, and could slingshot them into those all illusive places.

The Dynamo will travel to Colorado hoping that the Rapids 1-0 win on Saturday over the Chicago Fire is not a signal of good form. The Dynamo sit in eighth position and know that three points would leave them level on points with the sixth placed Seattle Sounders. This could be the incentive they need to start finding their best form after an inconsistent season.

Having not picked up a win on the road since early July, the Dynamo are not an accomplished side away from home, but Saturday's 2-2 draw in Portland could give them hope of finding extra solidity away from the Compass Stadium.

The Rapids know that a win will not lift them from the bottom of the Western Conference but could begin to put pressure on the teams above them. Tonight is their second of three matches in eight days and the first of two straight home games, so three points tonight could inspire their fans to believe and push the team to an unlikely playoff birth.
