One of the most popular movies in the 1980s is set to return in a sequel, “Top Gun 2”. According to producer David Ellison, the new film will delve into the end of an era of dogfighting.

The Guardian reported that “Top Gun 2” will explore the culture clash between traditional aviation and the new age unmanned drones.

Skydance, Ellison’s production company, confirmed that the sequel will feature actor Tom Cruise, who will reprise his role as Maverick, the main fighter pilot in the first movie.

“When you look at the world of dogfighting, what’s interesting about it is that it’s not a world that exists to the same degree when the original movie came out. This world has not been explored. It is very much a world we live in today; where it’s drone technology and fifth generation fighters are really what the United States Navy is calling the last man-made fighter that we’re actually going to produce. So really exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots, and what that culture is today, are all fun things that we’re gonnaget to dive into in this movie,” Ellison explained

Ellison told Collider that Justin Marks is currently writing the screenplay for the movie. Marks reportedly has an amazing role for Maverick and took into account the transformation that fighter pilots in the Navy have become at present. Ellison said that there is no “Top Gun” without Maverick and it will never be the same if Maverick, or Tom Cruise, would not be in the film.

The producer also shared that the movie may come to 3D and IMAX theaters.

Based on the same Guardian report, rumors of a “Top Gun” sequel started in 2015 when original director Tony Scott planned to return. However, he did not intend to bring back the world of Maverick, Goose and Ice Man, but wanted to focus more on unmanned drones. Scott, unfortunately passed away, and the project was placed on hold since.

Cruise also confirmed that he wanted to do a follow-up to the hit movie that made him a big star. “Top Gun” launched in the United States on May 16, 1986 and became the highest-grossing film of the year, also raking in $354 million at the world box office.

“If we can get over some stumbling blocks it will be fun to do,” Cruise told Sky News in 2014.
