Sony smartphone fans are looking forward to what the upcoming Xperia Z5 has to offer as the Z4 "proved to be nothing more than a minimal upgrade over the Z3, which is something that caused an uproar among fans,' Android Authority noted. "The Japanese manufacturer sure had its reasons for doing this, though, and that is why the phone was never released outside the company's home country."

And now, proof of the upcoming handset's existence, including that of the Z5 Compact, have emerged via a photo leaked on social media. The snap showed three devices, with an iPhone 5s in the middle serving as reference for the Sony smartphones.

"The leakster labels them as the 'Sony Xperia Z(TBC) and Compact.' The number is 'to be confirmed,' but we have seen advertising show the number '5' recently. Regardless of the moniker, these should be the phones we see next, and that is the big deal here," the site said.

"The snap gives a teaser of the fingerprint sensor that Sony looks poised to include, placed on the right side of each device and forcing the volume rocker to relocate lower down," Phone Arena observed. "Aesthetically, the duo appears largely unchanged from the most of the past few Z Series handsets, although this isn't necessarily a bad thing given the Xperia line's general acclaim for decent design."

It also appears both models don't have the USB C feature yet, and that the rear will reportedly still be glass, "though not as slippery," according to Android Police.

The site also noticed that these leaks appeared too early, as the Z4 was only released in the summer. However, considering Sony tends to release two flagship devices annually, it appears the emergence of the photo is just about right in accordance to the company's timeline. This may change next year, though, as Sony had previously said it will be slowing down its product launch frequency.

There are rumors circulating that the upcoming gadgets may be introduced during the company's press event on September 2 at the 2015 IFA in Berlin.

"Everyone expects the Sony Xperia Z5 to be the star of the show. The Xperia Z3 family was unveiled at IFA 2014 so there's no reason to break tradition," GSM Arena noted.

"The new flagship is expected to grow the screen size to 5.5 inches," the site added. "The camera department will use the 21MP IMX230 sensor on the back and an 8MP selfie camera. The flagship should be powered by a Snapdragon 820 chipset, though that hasn't been released yet, so we might see another 810 instead."
