Pet dogs in South Korea are reportedly undergoing cosmetic surgery. The procedure is said to be medically safe and successfully enhances the physical appearance of animals in the Southeast Asian country.

ChosunIlbo, a local publication, reported that pet owners in South Korea are having their dogs go through plastic surgery with the intention of making them look better. The procedure is done by a veterinarian. Most of the animals that have plastic surgery are dogs.

Some of the methods involve shortening the tail to make the animal look more adorable and trimming the ears to make these pointier. There are also other approaches that are almost the same as what human beings have, such as wrinkle removal, stomach stretch marks removal, double eyelid surgery, fat removal and botox.

“Plastic surgery for pets in the past were for medical reasons but the result also brought better looking dogs, so there is a growing customer base getting a plastic surgery for cosmetic reasons on their dogs,” said one unnamed veterinarian.

Another vet, Dr. Yoon Sin Geun, said that cosmetic surgery for pet dogs was shown to be medically safe and that owners had the right to enhance the appearance of the animals they own.

Kotaku wrote that recently, South Korea has become quite popular as a destination for plastic surgery. However, many pet owners have concerns with pets undergoing invasive cosmetic procedures. One survey in Daily Vet, a Korean veterinarian magazine, showed that 63 percent of pet owners who were polled stated that plastic surgery for dogs should be banned. A local animal rights grouped categorized the methods as forms of animal abuse.

Koreaboo revealed that netizens were outraged upon their discovery of pet plastic surgery become increasingly popular. There were several comments that blamed selfish owners for their vanity. Some wrote that owners should not risk the health of their pets for aesthetic reasons and that the owners should be the ones who should go through the painful process.

Chosun Daily shared a before and after photo of one dog who had surgery to make its eyes bigger. Surgeries are even done on dogs under one year old. The procedures can cost anywhere from $60 dollars up to several thousands of dollars. There are about 10 million families with pets in Korea, according to Nonghyup Economics Research Facility.

More details and news regarding the growing trend are expected to surface in the coming weeks.
