Some users may have upgraded to the new Windows 10 but are not very happy with the outcome. There is a way to return to Windows 7 or Windows 8.

Tech Times wrote that Windows 10 was provided as a free upgrade for Windows 7 and Windows 8 users around the world beginning July 29, 2015. There were various new features, functionalities and enhancements made but not all users found the changes suitable to their computer activities. Microsoft previously anticipated mixed user reactions so it integrated a special tool on Windows 10 to let users revert to their older version of Windows if they wish. Users, however, have to revert soon, because the special option will only be available for one month after they install Windows 10.

Based on the same Tech Times report, users should back up all their data before downgrading. The process might cause some to lose data along the way, so backing up important files via an external hard drive or cloud storage service is recommended.

Next, there is a “Windows old” folder where the old version of the OS will be kept after users upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 7 or Windows 8. The folder will let users revert to the old version straight from Windows 10.

Users must click on the Windows Start menu found at the bottom left portion of the screen. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery. Users will find an option to “Go back to Windows 8.1”, if they moved up from Windows 8.1. An option to “Go back to Windows 7” will appear for users who used to run Windows 7.

Next, users must choose “Get Started” to begin the downgrade process. Laptop users have to link to a power source first to use the option.

After choosing to proceed with the downgrade, Microsoft will ask users about their decision to revert. Users can write their comments and feedback then click “Next” to proceed with the downgrade. Users will have various opportunities to cancel the process. There will also be reminder to use the old password if the previous Windows version was password-protected. Users will frequently click “Next” and wait until the downgrade is complete. The whole process will take only around 10 minutes.

Forbes reported that Windows 10 has been downloaded more than 14 million times and shared the reasons why it is a worthwhile upgrade. Primarily, the cost of upgrading will be zero for most users. Windows 10 Home and Windows 10 Pro will cost $119 and $199 respectively. The new OS has longer support, more flexibility and universal apps, better gaming experience, better search and Cortana function, an improved Edge browser and virtual desktops, added security and minimal system requirements.
