People who wish to have an idea how outer space sounds like now have the opportunity to listen. The new “golden record” of the Voyager 1 space probe is currently available on SoundCloud.

NBC News reported that NASA has shared the Voyager 1’s golden record on streaming service SoundCloud for free. The audio files may be downloaded directly from the NASA website, although users prefer to stream these via SoundCloud. The record consists of greetings in various languages around the world and other thought-provoking sounds, arranged in alphabetical order on SoundCloud, instead of chronologically, as these were presented on the record. The sounds have actually been available online for years, but the recent compilation made these easier to listen to.

Astronomer Carl Sagan is chairman of the committee. He chose and designed the materials to be used for the record.

The twin Voyager spacecraft launched in 1977, carrying two golden records containing the sounds of Earth. The Voyager traveled past various planets like Jupiter, Saturn and Neptune and over the edge of interstellar space. The records were supposed to be a greeting to any aliens that the spacecraft might meet in its path, similar to a message in a bottle thrown out in the ocean, according to Sagan. Several sounds were chosen to be included in the golden records, such as the sound of rain, stone tools, a heartbeat, etc., which indicate the presence of life on Earth, Popular Science revealed. Streamers cannot expect to listen to any music, however.

Currently, the two Voyagers continue to travel in outer space. The Voyager 1 is known to be the only artificial object to depart from the solar system. It is about 132 astronomical units or 12 billion mile away from Earth. The golden record provides images, sounds and guidelines on how to acquire the images and presentations that show humanity’s biology and position in the galaxy.

There is no news of any alien life form getting in touch with any of the twin Voyagers or responding to the sounds that these carry.

The uploading of the Voyager golden record on SoundCloud follows the latest news that the streaming service is reportedly running low on cash. The issue is said to stem from intensifying licensing demands from major labels, based on a report by Digital Music News. Users might be interested in listening to the arranged golden record while it is still available.
