Do you remember Samsung's flip phones from about 2 or so years ago? It's back, and it's also called the Galaxy Folder, just like its predecessor.

"The phone is very convenient to use because you have both a keypad as well as a touchscreen, plus it will run Android Lollipop," SamMobile noted. "It features an F2.2 aperture and it's all powered by a huge 1,800mAh battery which is more than enough for its 3.8-inch display."

"The device will be available starting next month at around $250 but there's not much hope to see it on other markets than Korea. You'll also only find it in two color options: dark blue and white," the site added.

According to GSM Arena, the handset has 8GB internal memory that can be expanded to 128GB maximum. It also has an 8MP rear camera and 2MP front-facing shooter. The battery is detachable.

"The folding-style design combined with smartphone features, including the Internet, messenger and social networking services, will add to the device's convenience," Samsung said of its new offering.

"Samsung never quite gave up on flip phones. Every year they release some new devices and last year we had the Galaxy Folder with a resolution of 480×800, 2GB of RAM and Android 4.2.2 on it," SamMobile explained of the flip phone's enduring presence. "A lot of people prefer flip phones because they are very ergonomic, very resistant and their battery life is amazing."

Earlier this year, various news outlets noted Japan's renewed love affair with flip phones. Aside from the fact that these form factors render enhanced durability to the handsets & are known to have better battery life, the shape also makes the flip phone stand out amidst a sea of smooth, sleek, flat, touchscreen handsets. Also, the elderly find clamshell types easier to use.

"We thought flip phones would disappear, but some parents are opting to buy them for their teenage kids instead of smartphones because they are less of a distraction," said Tom Kang, research director of Counterpoint Research.

"Japanese shipments of flip phones rose for the first time in seven years in 2014, up 5.7 percent on year at 10.58 million, while smartphone shipments fell 5.3 percent to 27.70 million, according to data from market research firm MM Research Institute (MMRI)," CNBC reported earlier this year.

Flip phones may not have a robust demand outside Asia, which explains Samsung's focus on the South Korean market in selling the Galaxy Folder.
