Honda announced that it will be adding Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to its future vehicles. The car company aims to make its next generation of vehicles compatible with the smartphone integration systems of Apple and Google.
Engadget reported that a number of auto companies are already planning to provide support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay in its future models, such as Honda, General Motors, Chevrolet and Hyundai. Hyundai is the first auto manufacturer to feature Android Auto in its production vehicles, beginning with the 2015 Sonata with Navigation models. Honda will also be providing support for both car entertainment systems, beginning with the 2016 Honda Accord. Chevrolet announced that 14 of its 2016 models will support both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Computer World revealed that General Motors also announced in May 2015 that it will feature Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in most of its models in 2016.
“These and other major upgrades to technology and features make it the most high-tech Accord ever,” Honda said in the same Computer World report.
John Mendel, executive vice president of the Automobile Division for American Honda Motor Co., said, “Customers want their vehicles to be more intelligently integrated with their smartphone-powered lives, and we are committed to delivering that experience starting with Accord.”
Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are created to support seamless smartphone integration. These will also provide several new features and functions. For example, users can perform various functions on the Honda Accord’s 7-inch touchscreen to manage the vehicle’s features, settings and audio system, among others. Users can also apply their navigation systems, play music, make calls and send and receive messages.
Apple CarPlay is compatible with iOS 7.1 or newer versions and iPhone 5 or newer models. Android Auto is compatible with Android 5.0 and newer versions and will present several features and apps like Google Maps, Google Now, music and messaging.
ARS Technica wrote that Android Auto might feature a vehicle diagnostic app as well as expanded car integration. Based on presented photos, users may launch “Vehicle Check”, “Roadside Assistance” and “Service History” in developer mode. The three apps are intended to provide assistance to drivers on the road whenever they encounter technical problems and maintenance issues. There might also be several sensors that Android Auto may listen to. These will provide quick information to drivers regarding the status of their vehicle.
Overall, drivers can expect more intelligent cars in the months to come.
