Rumors about Apple's next tablet model started emerging some time after the release of the current model, the iPad Air 2. Judging by the frequency the rumor mill has churned out new reports, it would seem that the next iteration is near in coming.

According to recent reports, the iPad Air 3 may be powered by an A9 processor and may be released alongside the iPad Mini 4 and the iPad Pro, according to Apple Insider.

"The design footprint - including the length, width, depth and thickness - of the iPad Air 3 will remain unchanged from the iPad Air 2, thereby raising the likelihood that an A9-powered version of the tablet will make a simultaneous debut alongside the new iPad mini 4 and iPad Pro this fall," the site said.

This report stemmed from Macotakara's report, which insinuated a triple tablet release by Apple. The tech news outlet's source had revealed that the upcoming iPad Mini 4 may be a "smaller version of the iPad Air 2." As such, it would appear that Apple's mini-tab may be one of the lightest on the market.

The said "shrunken iPad Air2" will allegedly have "an A8 processor and an 8MP iSight camera," Tech Radar also said.

"The dimensions will be the same as the iPad mini 3 except for the thickness, dropping to 6.1mm from 7.5mm," it added.

Considering the "underwhelming" features of the iPad Mini 3 - with virtually only a Touch ID differentiating it from the Mini 2 - it appears its successor will be a true upgrade. Perhaps this change will get more tablet users to switch to Apple?

Previous reports said that Apple may skip releasing a new iPad Air in order to focus its resources and the public spotlight on the upcoming iPad Pro. At 12.9 inches, it will be the biggest slate the iPhone maker will roll roll out, if rumors prove to be on the money.

The iPad Pro, also dubbed the iPad Plus, is said to be poised for a "small cautious" release in November, MacWorld said. The said device is alleged to have been inspired by the success of Microsoft's Surface Pro 3, which has been marketed as the tablet that could work as a laptop. However, MacWorld speculated that the said device may not be launched this year, although it would "love to be proved wrong."
