Is Amir Khan Avoiding Kell Brook? Boxer Still Eyeing Floyd Mayweather Fight

Amir Khan is still waiting in the wings to see who Floyd Mayweather, Jr. will select as his opponent this coming September.

Khan is believed to be a leading contender to face the undefeated American boxer though there seems to be no progress as far as fight negotiations are concerned.

Mayfield did mention two names, Andre Berto and Karim Mayfield, before but most critics believe that Floyd Jr. was fooling around, considering that he had earlier mentioned of a “solid” opponent for his supposed last fight.

Berto and Mayfield don’t exactly pan out in that criteria as pointed out by many and such could provide a small light of hope that the southpaw British boxer would get the nod.

What if Mayweather opts to fight another boxer? Where does this leave Khan?

While Khan and his camp have not bared any name on alternative opponents, one fighter that Khan is not considering is Kell Brook. Apparently, Khan is not to keen on facing a domestic rival despite the fact that Brook has been aching to face Khan.

"If I don't get the September fight I'd like to be back out again in November or December like normal. I'll be looking at those dates instead. But if I don't get the Mayweather fight there is still no chance whatsoever that I will fight Kell Brook before the end of the year” Khan said during an interview with Sport 360.

As far as Khan is concerned, the alternative will be left at the hands of his promoter Al Haymon. Ironically, Al Haymon is also an advisor to Mayweather but apparently the final say will still fall on the flamboyant one.

“He says that Floyd hasn't made his mind up yet. Floyd is the boss in his own promotional company like I'm the boss in mine. But the thing is, he picks and chooses when he wants to fight and who he fights. I don't think Al Haymon has much say, he can only advise him,” Khan says in the same interview.

Should he fail to land a September fight with Mayweather, Khan bares as well that he will most likely look at November or December as possible return dates. As to who he may eventually face will depend on how his talks with Haymon pan out.

With barely two months before September comes around, Mayweather is expected to be hounded by questions on who he really plans to fight. Aside from mentioning Berto and Mayfield, such an announcement could come soon considering the time that his would-be opponent would need to prepare.

Either that or Mayweather is trying to delay the announcement for added leverage - that is, facing an ill-prepared opponent.
