Details on the Xbox 720 are scarce, but new information has surfaced purporting that Microsoft's next system might enable stronger controls over gamers.

According to Gameindustry.com, the Xbox 720 would employ similar technology to the current Kinect. On the Kinect, the technology recognizes the gamers that step in front of the sensor. Gameindustry indicates that the technology would be employed on the 720 to control who can or cannot play a certain game or how many people can watch a downloaded film on any medium including the TV, cell phone, or computer.

The base for this speculation comes from a patent application that Microsoft filed back in April 2011. The patent is called "Content Distribution for Viewing User" and describes a system where a camera on a TV, cell phone, or other display will identify how many people are currently watching content on a screen. The cameras will also check to make sure that the user's license for the content covers that many viewers. If the license does not cover the amount of people currently watching or playing, then the game being played or movie will halt or force the user to purchase more licenses before resuming.

The technology seems a bit controlling and may not ultimately be popular with prospective audiences. The only clear reasoning behind this move is the ability for Microsoft to sell licenses at varying costs to cover different amounts of people who can watch a movie or play a game off the same screen at once.

Before this idea materializes however, Microsoft will have to find a way to ensure consumers buy the concept when pitched to them - a hefty task, frankly.

Will this idea be implemented?
