Rumors about the 6th generation iPod Touch's release began more than a year ago. However, until now, it's not known whether the device will ever see the light of day. Or the date of its release, should it be launched.

Recently, observers have forecasted a September appearance of the alleged iPod Touch (6th generation). This speculation is largely inspired by the fact that Apple typically holds keynote events in September of each year, where a new smartphone variant is also unveiled.

"It is possible that Apple is holding off the announcement of the iPod 6th Generation, and will announce it at the same time as the iPhone 6S, which is expected to be the new name of the 2015 version of the iPhone," Gospel Herald noted. "Since new versions of the iPhone and iPad are usually held on differing dates in the fall, perhaps that iPod Touch 6th Generation will show up when Apple unveils the iPad Pro Plus, assuming they do that version of the iPad."

"So far, there is no word on an exact date for these announcements," the site added.

Back in December 2014, Design & Trend said that the iPod Touch 6th gen may be unveiled together with the Apple Watch in spring 2015. However, spring has come and gone this year and no new iPod Touch was ever mentioned at the Apple Watch launching.

Then, in April this year, a source told AppleInsider that the iPods, including the iPod Touch, "are expected to see an update later this year."

"The source suggested that Apple could retain the same 4-inch screen size as the current iPod touch model, though they didn't offer any certainty on that front," the site went on to reveal.

Based on previous iPod Touch updates, AppleInsider speculated that a new version would most probably feature parts taken from previous iPhone models.

"Given that the current iPod touch lineup features the A5 chip that was used in the iPhone 4S Apple released in 2012, there are plenty of newer - and more powerful - options for the company to turn to," the tech news portal said.

Then, in late June and early July, hopes for the "mostly dead" iPod got resurrected after an image of new iPod variants were leaked via iTunes 12.2, Forbes noted.

"The models on show come in dark blue, gold, and pink, respectively. Those three colours do not yet feature in the iPod range, which suggests that the future of the iPod is not as dead as it may appear," the news source said.
