New updates revealed that 2012 Nexus devices will actually be getting the Android M 6.0.

Android Police cited that Google will announce a new update guarantee for Nexus products together with the Android M. Nexus devices are expected to receive huge system updates for the next two years as well as security patches for three years from the release date of Android M. Security patches will be guaranteed alternatively for a minimum of 18 months beginning on the date of purchase in the Google Store or Play Store, whichever is longer. The same guidelines will reportedly apply to the older and new Nexus models.

Android Police specifically pointed out that the Nexus 4, Nexus 10 and Nexus 7 (2012) models will not be receiving Android M, but will continue receive security updates for a while longer. The N4 and N10 was released in November 2012, so the two devices are already past the two-year cutoff for the new OS.

However, LittleGreenDude.com reported that initial rumors presented that the Nexus 4, 1st Generation Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 may not make the upgrade to Android M. However, new AOSP updates showed that the 2012 Nexus devices may be included in the jump.

Based on the AOSP repositories for the Nexus 10 (Manta), the device was tagged “android-m-preview” and included a valid code update from Google. The update was done on May 28, 2015. There were also other commits or code updates for the Nexus 4 (Mako) and Nexus 7 2012 Wi-Fi model (Grouper). Although the tags do not ascertain the rolling out of Android M on these 2012 products, these serve as proof that Google has been providing new patches to the products while developing Android M.

Furthermore, LittleGreenDude.com revealed that despite the devices being tagged with “android-m-preview,” these do not have device branches for Android M in the meantime. Even if all the devices actually receive the Android M update, it will likely happen after the preview period, similar to the Android Lollipop preview.

Google has not yet commented on rumors about the possible Android M updates, but 2012 Nexus users should be excited to learn that there is a strong possibility that they will move up to Android M in the future. Regarding the new devices, the N7 (2013) should expect to have system updates available before the summer ends and security patches should continue until the summer of 2016.

Google is expected to provide more details on the update and its policies at Google I/O 2015.
