Will Sony release an Xperia Z4 smartphone? Recent reports hint that one might be on the verge of being launched soon.

A Sony device with the model number E5663 was said to be featured on a number of websites. What makes this unit interesting is that it appears to be the rumored Xperia Z4 Compact.

"The Sony E5663 sports a 4.6-inch display with 1080 x 1920 pixels, thus being the first Sony smartphone with a 1080p screen that's smaller than 5 inches," Phone Arena said. "The upcoming handset has a 20.7 MP rear camera, and a 13 MP front-facing camera - Sony could certainly present it as a selfie phone."

"Other features seemingly include a 64-bit octa-core MediaTek MT6795 processor, 3 GB of RAM, 16 GB of internal memory, and Android Lollipop," the site added.

It can be recalled that the Z3 Compact has similar features, with a screen resolution of just 720p. Considering that the device leaked on Geekbench and GFXBench has an improved display resolution, it's quite logical to conclude that it might be the current model's successor.

"The benchmark sites also hint at a MediaTek MT6795 chipset for the alleged Xperia Z4 Compact i.e. an ARM Cortex-A53 octa-core processor which is clocked at 1.9GHz. The Sony E5663 is also slated to pack in 3GB of RAM and 16GB of on-board memory," Tech Times noted. "The mysterious Sony smartphone will apparently also boast a 13MP front-facing camera - a feature that will undoubtedly attract selfie addicts. The maximum megapixel for a Sony Xperia smartphone's front-facing camera is 5MP thus far."

Observers have speculated that the said unit may appear in the Indian market because "the model number E5663 is similar to the model numbers for other Sony Xperia phones launched in India i.e. the Xperia C4 Dual has the model number E5363 and the Xperia M4 Aqua Dual has the model number E2363," according to the site.

Sony has not yet released details about the Z4 and has not confirmed its release yet. As such, we'll have to wait for announcements of whether the company will truly be releasing such a device.

Previously, it's been reported that the Xperia Z4 anticipated by Sony fans have been announced as the Xperia Z3+.

"For those in Japan the handset is known as the Xperia Z4, because Sony's huge following means it can get away with a new name for such an incremental upgrade," Tech Radar said.

The Xperia Z4 will reportedly be launched in Japan this summer and may be made available to the rest of the world around this month.
