CNN has confirmed that the second New York prisoner escapee has been captured after a nationwide manhunt was conducted to find him.

The shooting and capture of Sweat ends the dramatic manhunt which started when he and fellow Clinton Correctional Facility inmate, Richard Matt, escaped last June 6. The manhunt included 1,300 New York law officers, according to Yahoo.

Sweat was taken into custody after a struggle with law officers in the town of Constable, New York. Authorities report that the prisoner was captured about a mile and half away from New York's border with the Canadian border of the province of Quebec.

Sgt. Jay Cook of the New York State Police was doing his patrol when he spotted "a suspicious" looking man walking down the road. "This was around 3:20 pm local time" according to Cook. Upon recognizing Sweat, Cook called out for him to stop. However, the escapee began to ran, causing the officer to shoot and hit Sweat with two bullets.

Sweat was reportedly hit twice in his torso and taken to local hospital for treatment. His partner, Richard Matt, was reportedly found and killed a few days earlier.

"The nightmare is finally over," New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo said in a news conference. "If you were writing a movie plot, they would say it was overdone." He added that Sweat was in stable condition and is receiving the best medical care.

Sgt. Cook has come home to a hero's welcome and was given a phone call by the Governor.  Cuomo tells cook in their conversation that "it was very courageous act. You should go home straight home tonight to your daughters and tell them that you are a hero."

Sweat's family seemed to be in relief that the escapee was not killed during the manhunt. Sweat's mother spoke to the media claiming that "We (Sweat's family) started to cry when we heard the news because he was not killed."

The second escapee was in jail for killing a police officer who followed Sweat after he committed robbery. Matt and Sweat were cellmates in prison and supposedly were able to get tools from a guard inside the prison. After cutting through the labyrinth of multiple barriers and underground passages, the prisoners emerged through a manhole in the middle of the street. They were found missing on June 6 during bed check.
