Moviegoers say goodbye to Andrew Garfield and hello to Tom Holland. The 19-year-old British actor will wear the friendly, neighbourhood web-slinger's costume in 2017.
Finally, our favourite web-head is now part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Holland will be making his debut on the MCU as Spider-Man in the upcoming Captain America: Civil War to be released next year. This news makes Spidey one step closer to becoming an Avenger.
With a new Spider-Man, must come new plots, love interests (or not), and new villains. Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige said that this reboot will be unique.
"It's the soap opera in high school, and those supporting characters, that are interesting," said Feige on BMD. He added, "Just as we hadn't seen a heist movie in a long time, or a shrinking movie in a long time, we haven't seen a John Hughes movie in a long time. Not that we can make a John Hughes movie - only John Hughes could - but we're inspired by him, and merging that with the superhero genre in a way we haven't done before excites us."
In this reboot, Pete's going to be in high school. As a teenager, it is important that the new film really dives into his teenage psychology. This is something that just wasn't emphasized enough on the previous films. Toby Maguire's Peter graduated from high school in the first twenty minutes of the film. Garfield's Peter did show he was in high school but was more focused on college life.
Screenart reports that Feige is very interested in working with Spiderman because the character has been through so much over the years and has become such a dynamic character in that time. Feige also claims that the personal side of Spiderman is also as important as any villain the superhero may face.
So, who will be the next villain that will make Peter Parker's life miserable? The answer is still up in the air. Green Goblin/Hobgoblin was in the previous two Spider-Man movies. We saw Venom raise some hell. Doctor Octopus tried to create "the power of the sun at the palm of one's hands." One scaly, sewer surfing super villain was once a brilliant scientist, whose experiment went a stray from growing severed limbs to creating lizard people.
Spidey's long list of bad guys will keep fans guessing. As a trailer or a teaser is yet to be released, all the avid followers can do is cross fingers and speculate.
The Spider-Man reboot is scheduled for release on July 28, 2017. On the other hand, Captain America: Civil War, where Tom Holland will debut, is scheduled for release on May 6, 2016.
