Apple vs Microsoft - who will win this year?

Early this year, the iPhone maker released the 12-inch MacBook, which the company touted as a revolutionary mobile computer that is "years ahead" of its rivals. Indeed, the device has innovative features which put it ahead of the pack and make it remain relevant even with the arrival of newer laptop models from other competitors.

And now, with the rumors of a Surface Pro 4 release intensifying, it appears the MacBook will be facing a contender this year that will give Apple a run for its money, considering the features rumored to be included in Microsoft's upcoming iteration of "the tablet that can replace your laptop."

"The Surface Pro 3, Microsoft's flagship tablet series, received another price drop promotion in the United States which has led to the speculation that the company is preparing to make an announcement for the Surface Pro 4," Christian Today observed.

"The promotion recently became available via the Microsoft Store and Best Buy," the site went on to reveal. "All Surface Pro 3 devices with an i5 processor and above will be eligible for a discount."

"A Surface Pro 3 with an i5 processor, 128GB storage and 4GB RAM will get a $100 discount, dropping its original price of $999 to $899," it added. "Everything above that level, from the Surface Pro 3 with an i5 processor, 256GB storage and 8GB RAM to the device with an i7 processor, 512GB storage and 8GB RAM will get a $150 price drop."

The said promotion runs until June 27 - a date very close to the rumored June 29 Windows 10 release. However, other reports say that the upcoming Windows OS version may be launched July 29, as noted by Tech Radar.

With that, it is possible that Surface Pro 4 may be released shortly after the aforementioned date. But considering the more powerful Intel Skylake processors reportedly won't be available until about August this year, the upcoming device might not be released until early fall this year, which is about the time Apple habitually rolls out its new products for the year.

Although Microsoft had made no announcements or confirmation regarding the Pro 4, rumors have it that the Surface Pro 3's successor may be fanless and equipped with a more powerful engine, thanks to Intel's Core M "Broadwell" CPU, and may even measure 12 inches, which appears to be Microsoft's way of challenging Apple's own 12-inch wonder. But that's just one of the two Pro 4's that will be allegedly released. The other model will reportedly have a 14-inch screen, according to Tech Radar.

The MacBook, as the public now knows, is super thin and light at 13.1 mm in thickness and sub 2 pounds in weight.

"There's an all-new keyboard, which spans the full width of the new MacBook," The Verge. "The keyboard features a new 'butterfly mechanism' for a better, 'much more precise' typing experience."

"The keyboard also has individual LED lighting for each key, helping to make the device that little bit thinner," the site added.

The said device has a Retina display registering a 2304 x 1440 resolution and consumes 30% less battery power than other displays in Apple's line of laptops.

Sounds like both devices are on par with each other, although some reviewers have commented that the Surface Pro is less stable when used with its keyboard out on a lap or uneven surface compared to a conventional laptop.
