Apple announced on Friday a replacement program that will reportedly fix faulty iMacs.

Apple stated that the replacement program will be for the 3TB hard drive in 27-inch iMacs, which were sold from December 2012 to September 2013. Apple stated that a very small number of the universal machines were made with a hard drive that might fail under certain conditions. The company said that an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) will replace the affected hard drives free of charge.

The company is also reportedly getting in touch with affected iMac owners who have given their valid email address during the product registration process to make the change.

They will be informing the owners about the replacement program. Users who have not yet been contacted, but believe that they have a 3TB hard drive, can also enter their serial number on the Apple website to determine if they are included in the replacement program.

Users can also take their iMac units to the Genius Bar at an Apple Store, after setting an appointment, to do the necessary inspection and replacement.

According to Apple, users do not have to reinstall everything after the replacement. Users are advised to back up their content before participating in the replacement program.

The Verge reported that since late 2012, iMacs provided the 3TB storage option as part of Fusion Drive by Apple. It was intended to pair a smaller and faster flash-based drive with a bigger hard drive.

The 3TB hard drive was never launched in any entry-level iMac configuration but has been provided to consumers and professionals who required additional built-in storage space for videos, music files, photos and other types of media content.

Mac Rumors wrote that the replacement program covers affected iMacs until December 19, 2015 or three years from the original date of sale of the affected devices. Users may also contact Apple to get a refund.

It is not actually the first time that Apple launched a repair or replacement program. In 2010, Apple started a repair program for early MacBook models.

In 2011, Apple also announced a replacement program for a number of 21.5-inch and 27-inch iMacs sold from May to July 2011, featuring Seagate 1TB hard drives that may also fail under certain conditions. The program was later expanded to increase the timeframe of the covered iMacs. The program ended on July 23, 2013 after Apple extended it for one year.
