Is Samsung going head to head with Apple by releasing a larger phablet?

Recent reports said that the South Korean electronics juggernaut will be releasing a device dubbed internally as "Project Zero 2" and has been dubbed by observers as the Galaxy S6 Edge "Grand," according to Phone Arena. Some have also named the said unit "S6 Plus."

The alleged device will reportedly still come with its signature dual curved screen edges but will be a bit bigger than its predecessor.

"The S6 Plus is said to have either a 5.4 or 5.5-inch Super AMOLED display with curved edges on both sides, just like the Galaxy S6 Edge," Mashable noted. "It's also rumored to be rocking a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 hexa-core processor (same one as the one in the LG G4), 32GB of internal storage, 16-megapixel back camera and a 5-megapixel selfie camera."

Notably, the iPhone 6 Plus has a 5.5-inch screen. Also, tech pundits have noticed that the S6 is similar in looks and specs to Apple's smartphone. Both aspects considered, comparisons between the Apple unit and Samsung's upcoming product may be resurrected with renewed vigor.

Some have speculated that the move may be due to Apple's phablet affecting Samsung's 2014 revenues, as the release of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus reportedly pushed the Asian firm's profits to "an all-time low."

"The company has seen a slight rebound so far this year thanks in part to the launch of the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge. But those phones have also been criticized for copying the design of Apple's iPhone 6," Apple Insider pointed out.

A case of tit for tat between the tech giants?

Previously, pundits have speculated that Apple's entry into phablet territory may be inspired by Samsung's success in selling smartphones with bigger-than-usual displays. And now, it appears that Apple may be giving its rival a run for its money, prompting Samsung to come up with something at least on par with the American firm's current offering.

However, Mashable is skeptical about S6 Plus and said that releasing such a device is a baffling move due to the following reason: "Samsung already has a smartphone with a bigger screen, the Galaxy Note 4. The company also sells the Note Edge, essentially a Note 4, but with a secondary "edge" display on its right side."

Then there's the fact that the rumored device would fall too close between the S6 and the Note 4's sizes.

"We all know how much Samsung loves to have a broad range of devices with different screen sizes," the tech news site qualified.

What do you think of the possibility of a bigger S6 Edge?
