During an interview with Essence magazine via Bustle, Jussie Smollett, who plays Jamal, revealed that Season 2's story is going to be more heated compared to its predecessor. He said that the new season will make Season 1 appear like "The Brady Bunch".

Hollywood Reporter cited that Alicia Keys, Lenny Kravitz and Chris Rock will be among the guest stars who will appear in the new season. Series showrunner Ilene Chaiken inked a deal with 20th Century Fox Television, which produces the TV series together with Imagine Television. "Empire" is created by Danny Strong and Lee Daniels, who are executive producers together with Chaiken, Brian Grazer and Francie Calfo.
