This granny can put people half her age to shame.

Harriette Thompson, a 92-year-old grandmother of 10, finished a 26.2-mile race in 7 hours, 24 minutes, and 36 seconds at the Rock 'n' roll Marathon in San Diego, making her the oldest female marathon finisher.

"Dressed in a purple Team In Training T-shirt and ball cap, purple shoes and purple shorts over white tights (concealing bandages that covered wounds from radiation treatment for squamous cell carcinoma), Thompson was welcomed at the finish line outside the San Diego Padres' Petco Park by confetti cannons and a throng of reporters," The Charlotte Observer reported.

"I can't believe I made it!" Thompson said a few hours later, speaking to the Observer by phone.

A couple of hours later, she expressed her surprise at her accomplishment.

"I can't believe I made it!" she told the publication.

"I was really tired at one point," she went on to say. "Around Mile 21, I was going up a hill and it was like a mountain and I was thinking, 'This is sort of crazy at my age.' But then I felt better coming down the hill. And my son Brenny kept feeding me all this wonderful carbohydrates that kept me going."

The son in question, Brenny Thompson, aged 56, was with the nonagenarian throughout the entire race, taking photographs and video footage of his mother.

Apparently, this is not her first attempt at running a marathon. In fact, it is her 15th. And she did not run the whole distance just to set a record.

According to Runner's World, her running was down to "supporting a cause that is important to her."

"In 16 years of running the San Diego event, she has raised more than $100,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma society," the sports news site relayed.

Thompson battled cancer herself, as well as many members in her family, even her own husband, Sydnor Thompson, who died of cancer at age 90.

Initially, at her first race at age 76, Thompson thought of walking the whole route. However, she steadily built her fitness up and managed to stride at certain points.

"thompson's longest training effort was an 11-mile run/walk," Runner's World noted. "She often races on the weekends, and fills out her training week by taking a variety of exercise classes in the retirement community where she lives."

"I just sort of save myself for this one big push," Thompson shared. "I don't know whether I could do it if I went real far [in training]. I know that the young people do 20 miles about three weeks before the run, but I've never done that. I just don't know if that would be a good idea. You sort of feel how much your body can stand."'

It was also revealed that Thompson had always been active during her younger years and was even a trained swim instructor and lifesaver.

The previous record holder was Gladys Burill, who completed the 2010 Honolulu Marathon aged 92 years and 19 days, according to Mashable. Thompson finished her recent one at age 92 years and 65 days.
