The latest update in the iPhone 6S rumor ticker tape is that the upcoming Apple smartphone will reportedly get a 12MP rear camera, which is a considerable improvement over the 8MP camera currently found on the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus.

But that's not all - sources also say that the shooter could be a Sony with RGBW subpixels, about Apple Insider noted that an "alleged switch to smaller pixels won't come at the expense of low-light imaging."

"RGBW makes use of an extra white subpixel to achieve a similar effect," the site added.

Talk has it that Apple had orignally planned to use an RGBW sensor on the current iPhone models. However, it chose to hold out and make sure that its inclusion "would meet quality standards."

Additionally, Phone Arena said that the new and improved camera will have a faster autofocus speed via phase detection.

If indeed these leaks are true, it looks like the upcoming iPhone will have a vastly improved photographic quality, which is always a welcome development for users.

Further, it does sound like the rumors about the new camera could be real as KGI Securities' Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst whose forecasts are considered pretty spot on, had also said that Apple will be upgrading its next smartphone iteration to 12 megapixels, as noted by Apple Insider in an earlier post.

There is no information, however, on whether the front-facing camera will also get a boost.

Previously, the rumor mill churned out speculations of a "two-lens system where the back camera uses two lenses and somehow takes it up into DSLR quality imagery," as relayed by Apple pundit John Gruber. This talk soon snowballed and was also reported by other news outlets.

Digital Trends, however, doubts the feasibility of this possibility, as there has been no smartphone yet that could replace the DSLR's quality. Can Apple change that with a future iPhone model?

"What we're really interested to see, however, is whether Apple includes optical image stabilization (OIS) technology that significantly improves low-light photography with the iPhone 6s," BGR mused. "The iPhone 6 Plus's camera came with OIS last year, although Apple didn't include the technology in its smaller iPhone 6 model."

As for the release date, some have safely projected the traditional release month of September as this year's Apple smartphone launch period. However, some has pegged the unveiling as sometime in July or as early as August.

What do you expect or want to see in the upcoming iPhone 6S?
